Philadelphia Art Alliance, August 3-31, 2012 - From the Past to the Future

I have been asked to exhibit Walk on the Wild Side at a special show at the Philadelphia Art Alliance in Philadelphia, PA. The show is being held in conjunction with the American Needlepoint Guild's 40th Anniversary Seminar, August 24-31, 2012 at the Downtown Marriott.

The exhibit will be a display of contemporary samplers. It is being mounted in preparation for a sampler competition at ANG in 2014.

There will also be an auction at the museum. This is ANG's forward thinking efforts to bring needleart into the limelight and give needle artists a chance to offer their work to the art world at large. This auction will be in addition to the auction held at seminar itself.

Needlepoint and sampler are not often used in the same sentence, but a sampler was orginally nothing but an example of various stitches used as a reminder of how to do a stitch. The more modern version is usually done on linen and often includes alphabets or sayings, which is more in imitation of samplers done by young girls in preparation for the responsibility of taking care of a household's linens (not to mention impressing possible future husbands). But if the original connotation is used, any needlework that shows a variety of stitches, as opposed to purely pictorial needlework, could be considered a sampler. Working within the definition that a contemporary sampler is a collection of different stitches, threads, and techniques, ANG will exhibit a variety of needleart.
